Bad Religion with The BRONX

29 June 2013 No Comment

The Regency Ballroom
By Alexander Guzman & Josh Kutras

We arrived to the Regency Ballroom in San Francisco just as The BRONX fired into their 2nd song ‘White Tar’, fuck you San Francisco traffic you made us miss a song!(& the Polar Bear Club) From the sound of the bands searing riffs, thunderous kick drum, and raspy rapid fire vocals, the place was going off big time! We hurried through the doors only to find a stoic SF crowd, mostly with their hands in their pockets talking with respective girlfriends/boyfriends.

I don’t know if this was because A) Bad Religion’s fans are so single mindedly focused on their ageing punk heroes they are incapable of enjoying anything else or B) People were pissed off that original openers Against Me!  Dropped off the tour and The BRONX were the late replacements; either way, it didn’t stop the LA natives from tearing the fucking place to shreds. Pulling from their 4 album catalog, they sounded tighter than most bands could ever dream of with classic BRONX songs like ‘Heart Attack American’, ‘White Guilt’, & songs from their latest release THE BRONX IV like ‘Ribcage’, & ‘Too many Devils’

Playing in front of a plain white backdrop that said THE BRONX, THE BEAT THAT KILLS, featuring a giant angry ape with glowing red eyes, The BRONX blasted through a 45 minute energy filled set despite the low energy crowd.   I did notice a few converts tapping toes and nodding heads, but not much else. The BRONX is one of the hardest working acts around today, you know what you’re going to get when you see them pure unadulterated rock ‘n’ fucking roll.

Next up the aging punk heroes themselves, BAD RELIGION, made their bay area stop to the Regency Ballroom to promote their new album ‘True North’. The atmosphere turned from stand around chatting with your friends, straight to bat shit fucking crazy as soon as BR hit the stage. Starting out with ‘Past is dead’, a cut off the new album, the slow beginning gave way to melodic madness, and the floor of the Regency turned into a swirling mass of bodies.

From there on out they proceeded to dive into their 32 year catalog of goodies and deliver a set laced with old, new, and everything in between. At one point NOFXs’ bed headed front man Fat Mike jumped on stage to join the guys for 21st Century digital boy, a nice treat for the bay area crowd. I could go on, and on telling you that age hasn’t really slowed BR, or that the crowd knew nearly every word to every song played; but you probably already knew that.  The kind of crazy enthusiasm that BAD RELIGION fans bring to the table hasn’t slowed a bit in 32 years, old and young alike definitely can agree to that. ‘True North’ is out now on Epitaph Records give it a listen…
