When Meshuggah took the stage to close out the final day of Fear Festevil at RockBar Theater in San Jose the entire building erupted. The Swedish prog metal pioneers lead by front man Jens Kidman ripped through a 15-song set culled mostly from their last two releases Kolos (2012) and obZen (2008) released via Nuclear Blast. The light show kicked into high gear displaying the full capabilities of the RockBar’s state of the art lighting rig. As advertised Kirk Hammett joined Meshuggah on stage taking over lead guitar solo for “Bleed”. Apparently this was the first time in the band’s history they let anyone play on stage with them. Just one more insane moment to cap off an incredible weekend. Fucking amazing.

In a recent interview with Sirus XM Metal Kirk talked about jamming with Meshuggah: “I could feel the power behind me,” he said. “And I was thinking about it, and it was kind of like being in front of a locomotive. And the only way to, like, keep in front of that locomotive is to just play my ass off and keep up with it. Their stage show is trippy, because they have lights — a lot of lights — and you can barely see those guys. So when I walked on stage, it was so dark on stage, I could barely see my [guitar] neck, but, for some reason, somehow, some way, that kind of added to the overall vibe.” Check out fan shot video & more on Blabbermouth.net.

Commemorating the 25th anniversary of the recording of its first EP, MESHUGGAH released a concert DVD / 2CD set and Blu-ray, “The Ophidian Trek”, on September 30, 2014 via Nuclear Blast. Meshuggah is currently slowly working on follow up to 2012’s Koloss.
