Metallica’s Kirk von Hammett held his second annual Fear Festevil at the RockBar Theater in San Jose earlier this month. The three day Monster Mash is centered around Kirk’s insane collection of horror memorabilia, a horror convention, and sets from Ghoul, Orchid, and High On Fire on Saturday & Asada Messiah, Agnostic Front, and Meshuggah on Sunday night. The entire weekend was well organized and all involved did a great job in presenting the fan with a truly one of a kind metal/horror experience, horns up to the promoters and RockBar staff. Check out our coverage of the first Fear Festevil held in San Francisco in February 2014 here.

In the afternoon the parking lot was transformed into the Carnival of Chaos with horror-themed old school carnival games, a vendor tent, and a vintage hearse show that featured Kirk’s custom-built 1936 Ford which were all open to the public free of charge, which was pretty cool. Inside the venue both days included Kirk’s Crypt, celebrity appearances, meet/greet, panel discussions, a freak show, and costume contests/giveaways.

Fans were able to get up close and personal with some impressive heavy hitters with appearances by Corey Taylor (Slipknot), John 5 (Rob Zombie/Marilyn Manson), Charlie Benante (Anthrax, S.O.D.), Slash (Slash/Guns N’ Roses) & of course the crypt keeper himself Kirk von Hammett. Later in the afternoon they all joined horror film icons (like Bill Moseley, from the Rob Zombie’s masterpiece “The Devil’s Rejects”) for a panel discussion. Oh and they all rocked a 5 song all star monster jam on Saturday Night with High on Fire.

On display in the RockBar Vodka Bar was Kirk’s Crypt, showcasing a portion of his vast collection of Horror memorabilia, masks, costumes, paintings, collectibles, guitars, props, you name it he probably owns it. In 2012 Kirk documented this expansive collection in “Too Much Horror Business, The Kirk Hammett Collection” , a hardback, coffee table book with over 300 full color pages. For both days down time between sets we covered by The Freak Show Deluxe and the costume contest. One winner was selected each evening & presented a custom Nosferatu ESP guitar by Kirk himself. Saturday’s prize went to a girl dressed as Pyramid Head from the Silent Hill franchise that was pretty sweet & deserving.
