Review: Josh Kutras

Kowloon Walled City performed at the The Golden Bull in Oakland, California last month for the final show of the Grievances/Constantly Off West Coast tour. The San Francisco band celebrated the release of their new full-length record Grievances which was released worldwide October 9, 2015 on Neurot Recordings, with vinyl on Gilead Media. Fight Amp & whatfunlifewas provided main support.

I’ve said it before, and i’ll say it again, Oakland is one of the best places for live music. Not only is there a rich scene there, be it punk, metal, hip hop, sludge, doom, etc… But, they also have the type of venues to support a thriving underground scene. On this particular evening we descended upon the Golden Bull, a bar with a sizable dance floor and stage, and surprisingly great sound for a small venue.

As we arrived whatfunlifewas, was performing a set of indie dream pop influenced music reminiscent at points of bands like the Psychedelic Furs. An interesting choice for this show, but the band was tight, and sounded good.

Up next Philadelphia’s Fight Amp. Pulling mostly from their recently released EP CONSTANTLY OFF, Fight Amp made noise like there was 20 people on stage, when in fact they are only a trio. Tight, heavy, & occasionally melodic these guys are fucking amazing live. I know delicate micro sub genres are all the rage these days , but it was refreshing to hear a band like Fight Amp who for my money are just straight up and down heavy rock. Fuck all the hipster slang beingthrown around like hot cakes, drums, bass, gits and vocals, fucking loud and precise. In other words, a good god damned time, support this band tell your friends, and see them wherever you can.

Kowloon Walled City are superb, they are heavy and sludgey, while also being crisp and clean, a lot of this has to do with lead vocalist/guitarist Scott Evans technical prowess as an engineer and producer. This was my first time witnessing the monolithic four piece live, and what a fucking treat!  They worked straight through their newest album GRIEVANCES (2015 Neurot Recordings) front to back, and ending with two songs off of their prior release CONTAINER SHIPS (2012 Brutal Panda Records). To say they were working like a well oiled machine is a severe under statementall four members played through the set with their hearts on their sleeves, artists enjoying fleshing out something outside of the realm of typical song structure and rules. Brilliant set, from a brilliant group.

Kowloon Walled City formed in 2007 and has released an EP, Turk Street (Wordclock, 2008), and two full-length albums, Gambling on the Richter Scale (Perpetual Motion Machine, 2009) and Container Ships (Brutal Panda, 2012), as well as two splits. Among the bands it has shared stages with are Neurosis, Tragedy, Sleep, Thou, Coliseum, Zozobra, Fight Amp, Roomrunner, The Body, and Helms Alee.
