“We believe every single thing we read on Facebook, Hello, San Francisco!” Psychedelic alt rock icons Tool threw some love to the Bay Area adding two nights at the Bill Graham Civic in San Francisco to kick off their US tour. The two night run is billed as “an evening with Tool” with 3teeth supporting, while the rest of the tour will feature local boys Primus.

The sold out crowd was plenty revved up after a crushing set by LA industrial act 3teeth laid down their take on some classic heavy industrial dance metal reminiscent of early Skinny Puppy, KMFDM, Marilyn Manson, Ministry, NIN. It was awesome & I highly recommend you get there early to check these guys out you will not be disappointed.  3teeth released their self-titled debut on Toronto’s Artoffact Records in 2014 reaching number eight on the iTunes Electronic Music chart.

The crowd erupted when Tool took the stage shortly after 9:00pm launching into a epic cover of Led Zeppelin’s No Quarter for only the 2nd time since 1998. Enigmatic front man Maynard James Keenan – known for his outlandish stage persona – took the stage in full riot gear complete with helmet and visor – aka fucking RoboCop. A furious mosh pit was upgraded to full on war zone when MJK blew a kiss to the crowd before lurking into the The Grudge. Continuing with cuts from 2001’s Laterlus with the hypnotic “Parabol/Parabola” and “Schism.”

A nice surprise was fan favorite Opiate from their self-titled 1992 release that was re-worked with an extended spacey little jam section before returning to the final verse sparking a deafening sing-along. An inspired Ænema kept the party rolling right through the new instrumental Descending before a wild Jambi, Forty-Six & 2, and a mystical drum solo. Maynard was late for the vocal section of the powerful Vicarious off 2006’s 10,000 Days but MJK jumped back in as the band restarted the section hilariously remarking, “I had to take a piss, much better.” Closing out the night Maynard said “We’ll see you tomorrow night,” half expecting the house lights to come on, as is typical Tool, then the crushing chords of Stinkfist emerged ending the epic 2 hour set.

While on paper the setlist looks very similiar to the “greatest hits” package they’ve been touring since closing out the 10,000 days touring cycle 8 years ago, but don’t be fooled, this was an explosive show front to back. Night 2 may or may not offer any new surprises, maybe the same set but at the end of the day it’s fucking Tool so if you are one of the lucky to get in to Night 2 do your self a favor and check your over-inflated expectations at the door.
