Plan 9 kicked off the Halloween music season with their unique horror punk tribute to the Misfits at the Ritz in San Jose last week. Filling in for The Dwarves who canceled several weeks ago, Plan 9 rocked a solid bill that included support by San Jose’s rising hardcore foursome Dolores and punk rock vets Sad Boy Sinister, both of which put on high energy sets that got the crowd plenty warmed up.

The original Misfits, lead by frontman Danzig, broke up in 1983 but it was in the post break up years when they grew to the massive popularity they enjoy today. So not many people actually got to see their now legendary live gigs, leaving us to experience the glory of the old days through grainy VHS transfers from VHS on youtube, till now. San Francisco’s Plan 9 is truly a one of a kind Misfits tribute that brings the classic Misfits of the early 80’s to life, meticulously recreating the sights and sounds of the classic Misfits Horror Punk phenomenon with astonishing detail.

Musically the demonic foursome were spot on as they tore through a barrage of early Misfits classics transporting the crowd gathered at the Ritz in San Jose back in time. They say the devil is in the detail, the boys in Plan 9 not only sound like the Misfits they actually do an incredible visual recreation of the Misfits unique appearance. The entire band took the stage sporting the Horror Punk’s trademark “devil locks” hair cuts. Rotten Ron on drums was covered in a blood like substance while Scarey Only on Bass & Wulfenstein on Guitar both took the stage shirtless with an uncanny physical resemblance to the Misfits’s chiseled guitarist Doyle. Not to be outdone frontman “Seven” also eerily resembled his counterpart Danzig in both appearance and vocals ability. I can see why now Danzig himself once declared the ‘Better than the Misfits. Plan 9 was formed in 1997 in Oakland, California their first live show not only sold-out in under an hour, but had in attendance Kirk Hammett and James Hetfield (Metallica) and Jim Martin (Faith No More)! Years later, this tribute band has grown into a full-fledged horror punk band releasing two albums of original songs “8 Hits from Hell” on Pure And Proud Records, which featured a guest spot from Misfits bassist Jerry Only, and their most recent “Manmade Monster” on Nickel and Dime Records.
