Stubble caught up with Orion, bassist/guitarist for Behemoth before their sold out show at Slim’s in San Francisco. Headlining the Decibel Magazine Tour with Watain, the Devil’s Blood, and In Solitude, Behemoth returns to the U.S. with the most extreme line-up on the year. Also marks Behemoth’s return the US since Frontman Adam “Nergal” Darski’s diagnosis in 2010 and eventual remission of Lukiema.. Orion catches us up on the band’s activity during the last year and a half, religious protestors, and a new Behemoth biography due out later this year.

Orion: It’s good to be here.

Stubble: We missed you guys. It’s awesome to see that everything worked out for the better.
Orion: Yeah so far so good and we’re glad to be back on the track.

Stubble: So what did you do during the break?
Orion: First of all we still remained as a band during the break. We had so many things going on while Nergal was in the hospital and he was actually working there. So we even had the record (2011 Abyssus Abyssum Invocat) put out in this time, it was not the songs we were recording, was just some out takes from former sessions but yeah we still had things happening in the band. I also have my other band so that was thing I was doing and…

Stubble: What’s the name of the band?
Orion: Vesania, its a small black metal band not a really big thing. I also work at the studio, recording studio, so I produce and record some music.

Stubble: Incredible line-up Behemoth, Watain, the Devil’s Blood, In Solitude. Everyone’s from Europe right?
Orion: Yes it is! Finally we are in a position to choose the bands we play with. Invite them to the tour. It used to be all the other way, we were just happy to catch up and get on some tour. These are the bands we’ve always wanted to get on tour with us. That’s like a dream line up for us. They’re good friends, great bands. Yeah I’m so happy

Stubble: How have the shows be going? I know Watain had some hiccups.
Orion: Yeah they missed the first four shows of this tour. They had some visa issues.

Stubble: No more venue changes like in Ohio?
Orion: Not that I heard of, that was the only one.

Stubble: You have to watch those middle states in between the two coasts…
Orion: Whatever, we are used to that. There are so many things happening to us like especially in Poland shows being canceled, moved, or banned or whatever, it’s not even funny anymore.

Stubble: It’s becoming a pain in the ass Orion: It is a pain in the ass, especially if you have a tour planned and all your expenses and costs go this and that way and anciently something gets canceled, it just fucks you up but it is what is, we have to take it.

Stubble: What’s the show going to be like tonight? What kind of set list?
Orion: Most of the songs is last album Evangelion , because this break we had was right in the middle of tours for Evangelion , so we decided to finish the tours for this one first so there’s like four or five songs from this one. The set list is kinda big and there’s so much stuff on it.

Stubble: You have a track from one of your first album Moonspell Rights
Orion: This one’s like twenty years old or something. We re-arranged it a little so it sounds little more up to date. We do that sometimes, occasionally we just go through the old songs and rearranged them and play them live.

Stubble: One thing I noticed is that there are no religious protestors here, now when I go to the more mainstream music they’re everywhere. Do you ever run into them in the US?
Orion: Yeah we’ve that had that twice or three times as far I remember. Yeah it happened and We even walked out to these people to talk to them, they were not willing to talk to us at all…they were like standing here, we keep asking questions, “we don’t want to talk to you”.

Stubble: Part of your stage show was you used a Bible on stage and tear it up, so I was thinking do you have a box of Bibles that you travel around with? Do you take them out of hotels?
Orion: It’s people. People bring them to us, we just did it once or twice, then people get it and they start bringing Bibles and throw them on stage. We don’t do that anymore on stage.

Stubble: A new release? You’re looking at next year?
Orion: Whats happening now we are finishing the tour, then start thinking about the next album, and at the same time there’s a Behemoth biography coming out in a few months, in Poland and it is being translated right now so it should be out world wide in, I don’t know September or October approximately and yeah we sit back and do another album.

Stubble: It’s a great time for extreme music I think it’s getting bigger, do you have anything you say to legions of fans out there?
Orion: I just want to see out at the shows, that’s why we are here.

Stubble sits down with the Dark Lord of Black Metal himself Erik Danielsson of Sweden’s Watain at Slim’s on the San Francisco stop of the Decibel Magazine Tour supporting Behemoth with The Devil’s Blood and In Solitude. Watain’s brand of Black Metal not only sings about darkness, death, and the devil along with presenting his decomposing face so you know what he looks like, Watain goes a step further and let’s you know what his ass would smell like too, as their slaughterhouse stench permeates throughout the venue shortly before they take the stage announcing their impending arrival. Well we talked to Erik and tried to get to the source of this foul odor, we also discuss their new live DVD Opus Diaboli documenting their thirteenth anniversary show, religious protesters, show cancellations, and fans vomiting at their shows.

Stubble: Welcome back to California. So Watain is getting ready to release a new new DVD on May 5th called Opus Diaboli?
Erik: Yeah, it just turned into this really big deal which wasn’t our intention from the beginning. We just wanted to do a nice thing to commemorate the thirteenth year anniversary, and it turned into a movie, instead of concert dvd, and which in turn, turned into a box set with a book. Yeah, it’s a big release and at the same time we are doing it on our on label, it feels weird thinking about it.

Stubble: I am looking forward to it, because you have two things that most people don’t get to see: one is the full show on your anniversary and two you didn’t just do the normal thing you did a lot of behind the scenes.
Erik: Yeah..it’s like forty percent of it is the live show which in itself uses eleven cameras it’s a nice piece, the other sixty percent of the movie is like narrated passages with artistic footage, one long interview, backstage footage from back in the nineties, a lot of stuff.

Stubble: Congratulations you are officially the scariest band in the fucking world today.
Erik: We’re just being ourselves and people can think of that whatever they want. What scares people usually is straight out honesty and a genuine form of expression, because people have no use for that of these days…in music, which is mostly about entertainment…and a fast food kind of absorbing you know, and we don’t do that. We do it completely different, and of course a sinister foundation. So yeah,. of course people react. To think it’s shocking, it’s controversial, or shocking or scary and we are just being ourselves. And that’s I think is the charm of rock music, it scares some people and it attracts others.

Stubble: “‘Hell” of a line up for the Decibel Magazine Tour, Behemoth and Watain and we’re sold out tonight. How have the shows been going so far, you missed the first four shows…?
Erik: (Laughing) Typical Watain turmoil..tumbling in on the fifth show, “Hey here we are!”

Stubble: Then you had a cancellation in Ohio, somebody booked the show and was like “Wait a minute, Satan is on his way here”. So do you run into a lot of that and do you see a lot of religious protestors at these shows?
Erik: Far too few. I would love for all of them to come. What I like about when they do come, this might sound weird, I’d prefer their outlook on metal before you know, people that accept it without even thinking twice. Fuck, they are right. This is dangerous music. It does do things to people that’s certainly not Christian things. It does challenge a lot of conventions and in that sense of course, it is dangerous. Well, people that want to uphold conventions, uphold the moral codes of western society, because what we are doing is the the enemy of that and that’s how its always been. I am always welcoming protestors and I am always willing to let them speak because it makes people think and it makes those that are into it, I mean the real metal heads, I think it makes then even more proud of who they are, like “fuck you, we do what the fuck we want, come on and protest”

Stubble: I don’t think we have to worry about this becoming mainstream in any way but I do understand what you’re saying.
Erik: Well, what I mean not any form of real form of dangerous rock music, whether it be metal black metal, punk, or whatever, in the end, in essence, it cant really be a mainstream form of art because what it does, in essence, is to challenge the convention of the mainstream. That is the role it has to play otherwise it looses its character, one of its most important characters.

Stubble: Well that’s all I have you have anything you want to say to the fans?
Erik: I didn’t really know what this tour would be like till we were really on it. Just realizing that fuck, this is becoming one of those tours that we and the people that attend the show will remember for twenty years. There is magic in the air every night. The best thing about this tour is having The Devils’ Blood and In Solitude with us who are two of my favorite bands.

Stubble: I like to call your show a multimedia experience, I mean with Watain you get the full experience sights, sound, and the stench of rotting flesh, what is that smell?
Erik: The smell of Watain

Stubble caught up with G. Love & Special Sauce front man Garrett Dutton aka G. Love at the Electric Factory in Philadelphia on the last stop of their fall tour. We discuss the new album “Fixin’ to Die” (2011 Brushfire Records), 2012 winter US tour, the Occupy movement, and his new line of traditional Louisiana Hot Sauce: G.Love’s Special Sauce.

Click Here – Photo slideshow on Flickr

Stubble: You guys are wrapping up your fall tour right now, supporting your eleventh studio album, “Fixin’ to Die”. How are the fans receiving it?
G.Love: It’s been a good run for us, the record has been a real return to my roots as a blues player, a coffee shop musician, street musician. It’s really felt like a second chance to make a first record again you know, because a lot of the material is material I was working on kinda before I even met the band and um kinda stumbled on mixing and hip hop and blues. I was more of blues player and when I first started writing songs I was into a lot of folk music, Bob Dylan and music like that. This record, “Fixin to Die”, is kinda like that side of my music, kinda like the predecessor of the G.Love and Special Sauce records.

Stubble: You have eleven albums before you actually threw a cover on there…
G.Love: Yep there are four covers on the record: Paul Simon’s “50 ways to leave your lover”, “Fixin’ to Die” the title track is an old blues song by Booker T. Washington ‘Bukka’ White, there’s another one called ‘You’ve got to die’ which is a Blind Willy McTell song, and then a Velvet Underground cover called “Pale Blue Eyes”. So basically I never put out any covers, but once we decided we were going to go in a blues direction I said well let me put some of this material that I’ve had in my repertoire for long time like “Fixin’ to Die”, then we said if we’re going to open the door doing some of our own renditions lets do a hit so we choose ’50 ways to leave your lover’. If you’re going to approach someone else’s tune just make sure you put own stamp on it and I feel like we were able to do that with everything we approached.

Stubble: So what can we expect tonight at the Halloween Hootenanny? You guys going to be coming out dressed like Kiss or the Wizard of Oz maybe?
G.Love: No, no, but yeah we will have a little costumes going, it should be fun. Musically, what we’ve been doing is taking a musical journey, we kinda start with the new record which is more delta blues and we start acoustic and then kinda ramp up into working through some of our older records. We’ve been doing a pretty classic show right now I feel like a lot of old school stuff. Coming home and playing Philly is always been like this big thing you know, it’s kinda aggravating in a way. Sometimes you just want to be in a town where you don’t know anybody and there’s not some big thing, just playing your music and that’s basically what we want to do every night. It doesn’t matter where we are, who’s watching, just go up play the music. That being said like there’s definitely that home town pride and you want to put on the best show possible for the home town crowd and then you have a lot of people you grew up with…

Stubble: What’s coming up in 2012 what can we expect?
G.Love: We’ll be touring in January, February, and March and that will kinda be continuing touring “Fixin’ to Die” and at the same time we’ll looking to work on a new record in the beginning of the year.

Stubble: What’s up with the Occupy Movement, do you support that?
G.Love: Yeah actually I sent a shout out to them on the radio today. I’ve been talking a lot about that with my Dad and I think you have the have and have nots in our society, in any society and I think after the last ten years the economy has been in the pits so bad and there’s a lot more people that have not and want more. They see a lot of injustice with the way the government is set up and the taxation of the rich versus the taxation of the poor and I think there are generally unsatisfied group of people are coming together, being together and demanding someone acknowledge them and hopefully pass some legislation that changes…I think it comes down to the taxation of the very, very wealthy and they would like to see those people taxed more. I saw on CNN one of the placards that kind of summed up for one newscaster, a young person was out there and they’re placard was like “I have $70,000 in college loan debts and I have no medical insurance and I work full time and make $20,000 a year, where’s my bailout?”

Stubble: Cool
G.Love: The other thing we got going on besides the music right now is the G.Love’s and Special Hot Sauce. So make sure you get a chance to go on GlovesHotSauce.com or Philadelphonic.com and you can get you G.Love and Special Hot Sauce.

Stubble: Speaking of which didn’t you have a cooking show with your wife (Sarah Rabby Frigo) that got shelved or is coming out soon?
G.Love: We actually did shop cooking show for awhile but it’s not happenin’ but the hot sauce is happenin’ that’s why we’re talking about the hot sauce.

________________________________________________________________________________

With a slot on this years Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival Red Fang are poised to shotgun a hit of fuzzy metal straight into your lungs. Crusty, balls to the wall, beer soaked, hard rock has been finding it’s way back to larger audiences; and Red Fang are more than ready to carry that torch. </span?

Formed in Portland, Oregon in late 2005, the stoner rock influenced quartet, quickly found mainstream success partnering with Relapse Records. Stubble caught up with guitarist David Sullivan and talked about their new release Murder the Mountains, Relapse Records, smashing cars into pinball machines for their new video, and drinking PBR.

STUBBLE: How did the first show go in San Bernardino?
DAVID:It was awesome, but it was hot and dusty! It was great, it was a good crowd, a beautiful place actually, it’s where the US festival was held. So, it was nice but the sun was really brutal yesterday.

STUBBLE: You guys have MURDER THE MOUNTAINS out on Relapse Records right now; how did you guys hook up with Relapse?
DAVID: Well, the story with MURDER THE MOUNTAINS is; we recorded that record ourselves before we, we had a label before for our first record & then we decided we wanted to find somebody else… So we actually recorded it and paid for it ourselves, mastered it and everything, and then looked for labels, which is a little bit scary because it could have turned into an expensive pet project you know? But uh, we just kept shopping it around to a few different places, and Relapse dug it, and uh we’re stoked to be on Relapse it’s great.

STUBBLE:You guys did a video from the new album, right?
DAVID: Yes, Wires, we worked with the same guy who did our Prehistoric Dog video, same director, and really all the credit for the concept goes to him. He picks up on our personalities sort of turns it all into this whole exaggerated versions of us you know? We do love to drink, and actually in that video, I don’t want to give too much away, but we got this, put a battering ram on a car and smashed stuff, and it was awesome!! So fun to do!

STUBBLE: They let you drive the car?
DAVID:Yeah, there was no stunt drivers it was all us!

Detroit, MI has long been known for it’s contributions to American automobile culture, Motown Records, and for being the home of hockey royalty-The Red Wings. And now five trouble makers from the Motor City are making sure metal will have it’s place at the table too.

The Black Dahlia Murder have just released their fifth studio album Ritual on Metal Blade Records; garnering them a headlining slot on this year’s SUMMER SLAUGHTER TOUR alongside- WHITECHAPEL, SIX FEET UNDER, DYING FETUS and many, many more. Stubble caught up with lead vocalist Trevor Strnad at the Filmore in San Francisco CA, to discuss their latest release, Ouija boards, and Michael Jackson.

STUBBLE: How are the shows going so far?
TREVOR: Good man, it’s like five shows in the hole now, um been really packed out, really wild. Just, it’s been awesome so far, if this is any indication of what’s to come then it’s going to be a largely successful tour.

STUBBLE: How are the fans liking the new material so far?
TREVOR: It seems to be going over really good man, we’re playing five new ones, and uh the excitement level for Ritual seems to be there for sure, and it’s a good time to be in our band right now, it’s exciting.

STUBBLE: So yeah, you guys just released RITUAL your fifth release for Metal Blade right?
TREVOR: Um yeah man, five albums ten years, it marks the ten year anniversary of the band pretty much, I mean it’s doing really well, charted well the first week it’s really exciting to see that. I don’t know man, the fan response has been good, just happy to still be on top you know?

STUBBLE: You guys did a special order box set for RITUAL, it came with a Ouija board, and a bunch of other stuff. So do you find when you release box sets like that, it’s easier to move physical copies as opposed to digital?
TREVOR: Well, that was kind of the goal yeah, just to give someone more incentive just to seek out the physical copy. Literally it’s so easy to download stuff now, it’s just a couple of clicks away. Just a little more incentive to hopefully get people excited about the record, and I think in this case just the way it was tied in with the lyrical themes & stuff it just kind of worked out really well.

STUBBLE: Who are you hoping fans contact with this Ouija board?
TREVOR: Shit man, there’s all kinds of people you can contact…Um shit, I guess you can talk to Michael Jackson (laughs)

Like peanut butter & chocolate, marijuana & beer are two great things that go great together; San Jose CA’s Beerijuana have taken that philosophy and given it a crushing sound track. Formed in late 2007 with the goal of making heavy, abrasive music sans genre tags BEERIJUANA have blazed a trail leaving others in the dust.

Since their inception the band has played a bevy of shows to packed houses, released a self titled album, played with metal legends HIGH ON FIRE, and shot an independent music video for their track ‘Drunk Power’ STUBBLE caught up with the drunken warlords that are BEERIJUANA after a gig at the Caravan in San Jose CA, and talked about upcoming music in the works, the maniacal video shoot for ‘Drunk Power’, and the hidden sound system at the now defunct VooDoo Lounge.

Stubble: You guys just finished playing a show at the Caravan, how’d it go fellas?
Prophet: It went alright, it went alright.
Zack: It was a good show
Dr Crazyfingers: Hot!
Zack: Yeah, it was definitely toasty in there!
Prophet: I think we were pushing maximum occupancy, not enough room for my beers though.(everyone laughs)

Stubble: I heard some new cuts are coming out…
Prophet: Yeah, a bunch of new stuff coming out, as far as for the fans immediately. When were playing we got some new stuff coming out, we’re…
Frank: We busted out a couple of em tonight.
Prophet: Yeah, we busted a couple new ones tonight, we got some more in the works, and we’re looking to get in the studio and puttin’ em all on an album.
Dr Crazyfingers: We’re always writing, so we always kind of have stuff in the works.

Stubble: Anything new with the sound? You guys trying anything different?
Prophet: Busting a five string bass! Franks gettin super sick with it droppin the tone…
Frank: Yeah, getting a little bit lower
Dr Crazyfingers: It was cool, and he got some more gear for the sound and all that. So it really helps to kind of carry it out.
Zack: We have nicer equipment so we sound better.
Frank: Yeah, there’s no room to fuck up now!! (everyone laughs)

Stubble: Talk to us about the video ‘Drunk Power’, how did it come about?
Zack:I was doing this thing where I was going out and getting fucking wasted, and i’d come home and video tape these stupid messages to myself, and Hanot our boy who works the merch table, was my room mate and I would show him the next day. We started joking around how funny it was, and the idea just kind got a mind of it’s own, and from there we got BJ involved, and Juan Serna to come and shoot it for us. It was crazy we were so shithouse wasted by the end of the whole thing!

Stubble caught up with Suicide Silence guitarist Mark on the second stop of the Rock Star Mayhem in Mountain View California moments after their crushing set on the Revolver side stage. The boys from Riverside did not disappoint as they rampaged through fan favorites Wake Up, Unanswered, Disengage and No Pity for a Coward as well as three new tracks off of “The Black Crown” (Fuck Everything, You Only Live Once, and Slave To Substance).

Suicide Silence’s “The Black Crown” is released on Century Media and sold just over 14,000 copies in the States in its first week to debut at position No. 28 on The Billboard 200 chart. “No Time To Bleed” also charted at No. 32 on The Billboard 200 chart in 2009.

Stubble: You had a great crowd, we just caught your set, and the new material sounded great. You just released “The Black Crown”
Mark: Yep The Black Crown comes out on July 12th, yeah its sweet

Stubble: So you just released a track with Jonathan Davis right?
Mark: “Witness the Addiction”

Stubble: How have the fans reacted?
Mark: Yeah people think we’re sell outs. We decided to write a song that’s super low and we’re gonna write this and if we cant get Jonathan Davis on this track then we’ll probably not put it on the record. We wrote it so he could be on it. The way that it is the way that the chorus hits and the way that the chords go it’s basically a Korn progression. We took the influence and wrote the song for him.

Stubble: You have some other guest on Black Crown also…
Mark: Yeah we have Korn and Suffocation on our record. That’s is where our influences are in the roots of old school death metal and when we were in elementary school and listening to what was happening in heavy metal at the time. You cant hate on young kids listening to what’s happening we were listening to Mudvayne, Korn, Slipknot, Coal Chamber, Rob Zombie, White Zombie and all that stuff that’s where we came from.

Stubble: When does a girl become a woman?
Mark: Umm, I don’t know that is weird.
Stubble: We agree

Stubble: Desert island question: 1 book, 1 album, 1 movie?
Mark: The first book that comes to mind since i am reading it now is Corey Taylor’s “Seven Deadly Sins”. It’s really good, it’s rare I buy I book and read it all almost in a day. Album: “Great Southern Trend Kill” by Pantera I love that record. Movie I don’t know “Detroit Rock City”

Stubble: If evolution says we come from monkeys, why are there still monkeys?
Mark: Inbreeding, I don’t fucking know?

Stubble: Anything you want to say to all the fans who are coming out to see you this summer?
Mark: Yeah man thank you for buying the record or downloading it and still coming to the show and buying shirts hopefully, we appreciate it. When you see me and I am a dick to you I am probably just drunk or have to take a shit or do an interview?

Stubble: Who says your a dick? Where is that coming from?
Mark: I’m not a dick though, I just hear from people “Mark’s suck a dick”. I tell the truth?
Stubble: We’ll if you speak the truth there will always be haters.
Mark: Fuck em.
